Three joined buildings in the middle of the old town, one of them the baroque Velarde palace. The collection runs from the medieval Asturian altarpiece to Picasso, by way of El Greco, Goya, Sorolla and Dalí, and admission is free.
It is the most important art gallery in Asturias, with more than 8,000 pieces: Spanish, Italian and Flemish painting, a very complete representation of Asturian painters, and contemporary art. The buildings themselves — the palace, the Casa de Oviedo-Portal and the extension — are part of the visit.
A little history
The museum opened its doors at the beginning of the twentieth century in the eighteenth-century Velarde palace. Over the course of the twentieth century it incorporated the Casa de Oviedo-Portal, and in 2015 it doubled its exhibition space with a new building designed by Francisco Pinto.

Without a car
Local train to Oviedo; it is two streets from the cathedral.
Before you go
- Closed on Mondays, and the afternoon hours are shorter in winter: worth checking the same day.
- It can be done in a long hour or in three; the rooms are numbered and you can stop halfway.
