Gijón's great urban bay, with the promenade running along the top from end to end and the church of San Pedro closing it off on the Cimadevilla side. It is the beach you can do without a car and without planning: walk down the promenade steps and you are there.
It has everything —showers, toilets, sun loungers, accessible ramps and toilets— and the longest lifeguard season in this guide, from May to mid-October. When there are waves, it fills up with people learning to surf.

Getting there
Without a car
Bus to Oviedo and then the ALSA coach to Gijón, which runs often all day. From the bus station you walk down to the promenade.
By car
Half an hour from the house. Park in town, in paid car parks near the promenade.
Before you go
- At high tide the sand shrinks to a narrow strip by the sea wall: check the tide table.
- Dogs are not allowed on the sand during the whole bathing season.
- Cimadevilla is at the end of the promenade: the beach and the old quarter make one afternoon.
