Salinas is the kilometre and a half of sand where almost everybody learns to surf in Asturias: sandy bottom, waves of a reasonable size most of the year and a row of schools that rent boards and wetsuits and give beginner lessons.
It is the easiest beach to start: the waves break far out and clean, there are no rocks on the bottom, and there is a lifeguard in season. For those who already surf, Rodiles in Villaviciosa has the most famous wave in the north, and Tapia de Casariego, at the far west, is the other classic.
A little history
Salinas has been for decades the surf beach par excellence of Asturias: the first schools were set up in the 1980s, and since then it has been the entry point to surfing for most Asturians.

Before you go
- The water is cold all year: the wetsuit is not optional even in August, and the schools include it.
- It is not the only surf beach, it is the easiest. Rodiles, in Villaviciosa, has the most famous wave in the north and it is for experienced people; Tapia de Casariego, at the far west, is the other classic; and Xagó and Verdicio are quieter and close to here.
- If you have never surfed, a two-hour lesson pays off more than a day renting a board.
