Market

Oviedo's covered food market, right in the centre. Open Monday to Saturday —only until mid-afternoon on Saturdays— and closed on Sundays. This is where you buy Cabrales, Asturian chorizo or a bottle of cider to take back to the house.

Types of place

In Asturias, the place where you eat has a name, and each one has its own rhythm.

Sidrería

Built around natural cider, escanciado on the spot. Usually serves traditional dishes —cachopo, tortilla, chorizo in cider— alongside it.

Chigre

The classic Asturian tavern. Cider, vermouth, pinchos of tortilla and meat. The most authentic, least touristy option.

Lagar

A cider maker, usually outside the urban core. Some open a tasting room and sell bottles to take away.

Bar

A neighbourhood bar, informal tapas, sharing portions. A good pick for a quick meal.

Mesón

An eating house with a set menu, generous portions and a rural feel. Common in villages.

Restaurant

More elaborate cooking, a broad menu, a leisurely table. Booking is wise at weekends.

Market

A food market. For buying fresh produce to take home, not for eating on site.
