In Nava, apple country, you can visit a real cider press and the Cider Museum: presses, barrels and a pouring demonstration at the end of the visit. A way to understand why here cider is not served but poured from a height.
The museum goes from the apple tree and the harvest to the pressing and the fermentation, and ends with the ritual of the chigre — the pouring, the culín, the shared glass. There is also a corner for the music and the bagpipes, because cider here has never been drunk in silence.
A little history
The Cider Museum of Asturias opened in 1996 in Nava, one of the cider capitals of the region. Cider has been made in Asturias for over a thousand years: it is mentioned in medieval documents, and the cider press — the place where the apple is pressed — was for centuries the centre of social life in the villages.

A regional bus runs from Oviedo to Nava; the museum is a short walk from the village.

Before you go
- The museum closes on Mondays, is free on Tuesdays, and shuts for a few hours at midday.
- The pouring demonstration is usually at a set time: worth asking on arrival.
- In autumn, at the height of the apple season, the press is working and the visit is better.
